Mosquitoes in Burlington test positive for West Nile virus

The state Department of Health & Human Services would only say the victim was an adult living in the southeastern part of the state and that it occurred last week.

There's a high risk for West Nile virus infections right now in northeast Kansas - as well as much of the rest of the state, the Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment warns.

The Saint Louis County Department of Public Health has not said precisely where the Mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus were found. Williams County Vector Control does trap runs every morning to keep tabs on mosquito activity and the West Nile carrier, "Culex tarsalis". In about 1 percent of infections, West Nile virus can cause a severe illness affecting the central nervous system, such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord).

Mosquitoes are usually just irritating, but certain mosquitoes carry West Nile Virus, which can be deadly.

Symptoms of having West Nile virus include a fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches.

Mosquitoes in North Carolina are also known to carry other illnesses that can infect both humans and animals. About one out of 150 infected people develop swelling of the brain or brain tissue, that in some cases, can result in death.

Use an EPA-registered mosquito repellent and apply according to the manufacturer's instructions.

"Until the hard frosts of fall set in, Halton residents should continue to protect themselves against mosquito bites and remove mosquito breeding sites". From 2012-2017, there were 25 reported cases of West Nile virus in the state and seven reported deaths. The agency recommended using insect repellent, wearing loose-fitting clothing and avoiding skin exposure during peak mosquito feeding times at dawn and dusk in order to avoid being infected.
