11 babies die after pregnant women given Viagra

There are more than a dozen women who were prescribed drugs before the trial was halted who are waiting to see if the drug had an adverse effect on their pregnancy.

'The chance of a disease of the blood vessels of the lungs appears to be greater and the chance of death after birth seems to have increased. "All the women concerned are accompanied to the extent possible by the doctors involved in the study".

Pfizer held the drug's patent until December. All participants in the trial have now been informed whether they were given the drug or a placebo.

In the control group, three babies had the same lung disease but none of them died, according to reports.

Ganzevoort said her team have notified a group of Canadian researchers carrying out a similar study to warn them of the results.

But the study was halted last week after an independent monitoring panel learned that a higher-than-expected number of babies were being born with lung problems. Out of 93 babies born in the trial, 19 died, including 11 possibly from a lung condition linked to the medicine that resulted in reduced oxygen levels.

A similar study in the United Kingdom testing the effectiveness of sildenafil found no benefit to pregnant mothers, CNN reports, but did not show any of the adverse effects of the Dutch trial. Six babies were born with the lung disorder and survived. That research has now been temporarily stopped, she said.

'Game Changer': Scientists Say Liquid Water Found on Mars
And today it has been announced that scientists have discovered large pools of liquid underneath the planet's polar ice caps. Its radio pulses traveled through the Martian surface and polar ice caps, then reflected back to the spacecraft's antenna.

Also, Lunar eclipses are safe to view without any eye protection or special precautions, as they are dimmer than the full Moon. Interestingly, the occurrence came as scientists have discovered the first large body of liquid water on the red planet.

Viral post inflames anger in China over vaccine safety
The Chengshang scandal, which was discovered eight months ago but not made public until now, is no different. Hundreds of thousands of children might have been injected with faulty vaccines , the New York Times reports.

Researchers said their principle goal now is to find out what happened.

At the moment when the trial was stopped last week, a total of 93 women had been given Viagra to take during their pregnancy, while 90 others were given a placebo. A trial in Ireland has yet to start enrollment; researchers in that study did not respond to emails today, but Mol expects it will be canceled.

About 15 mothers in the drug trial group have yet to give birth.

Low birth weight contributes to 60% to 80% of neonatal deaths worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

"Pfizer was not involved in any aspect of this trial, and neither funded nor provided product for the trial", the statement said. That poses a hard dilemma for doctors: Inducing birth too early increases the risk of complications, but waiting too long could lead to developmental anomalies or stillbirth.

A similar trial conducted in Canada has been paused following the outcome of the Amsterdam trial.

Dr. Katie Groom, associate professor of maternal and perinatal health at the University of Auckland and the chief investigator of the Australia and New Zealand trial, said these lung problems and deaths were not seen there, nor in the United Kingdom, although they are reviewing all of the cases in the trial to be sure.
