WHO Seeks Urgent Increase in Hepatitis Testing, Treatment

The objective of the World Hepatitis Day is to send out a strong and strident message to people across the world, to create awareness and take action and join the massive movement to test and cure millions suffering from the viral. As per WHA, 300 million people are living with hepatitis completely unaware of the same.

Moreover, the visitors were shown awareness videos in their different languages to educate about the mode of transmission, treatment and preventive methods of hepatitis. Most of the times, people ignore the symptoms and receive treatment in the later stages of the infection.

It is equally alarming that less than 5 percent of diagnosed patients who meet treatment criteria for hepatitis B are receiving antiviral treatment. Washing hands is another way one can prevent a hepatitis infection. Yes! A vaccine can be given to those who are at increased risk of HBV infection such as healthcare workers. It is also given routinely to neonates as universal vaccination in many countries.

Finally, India is witnessing a reduction in prevalence rates of Hepatitis B. The rates for Hepatitis C are still high, though largely due to increase in IVDU in northern and eastern states. The two main conduits for hepatitis to spread are through contact between two people by bodily fluids or infected faeces.

The International Hepatitis C awareness day was held on 1 October 2004 but multiple dates were considered globally. Most common factors that can cause Hepatitis are - viral infection, heavy alcohol use, toxins, careless medications, and certain medical conditions.

There is a different theme for World Hepatitis Day each year. In a study in which families of 225 patients who had tested positive for Hepatitis B were screened, additional infected individuals were detected in 45 (20 percent).

According to WHO, viral hepatitis B and C are major health challenges, affecting 325 million people globally, and they are the root causes of liver cancer, leading to 1.34 million deaths every year.

HCV can cause severe liver damage and can lead to death if left untreated. "Our new recommendations should pave the way for everybody with hepatitis C to access testing and curative treatment now". About 40 million people live with chronic hepatitis B in the region while an estimated 10 million live with chronic hepatitis C. Urgent action is needed to find, test and treat the missing millions suffering viral hepatitis, World Health Organization said. Most of the hepatitis cases, doctors warn, end up in the cancer of liver.
