But even Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue admits this is a short-term fix that probably won't fully cover the losses that many usa farmers will suffer when the prices for their crops drop due to lost export markets.

The US treasury secretary insisted Sunday that agricultural issues were discussed in President Donald Trump's talks last week with Jean-Claude Juncker, contradicting the EU Commission president's account of the negotiations. Checks will go out to farmers "as soon as they prove their yields", according to Perdue, who says the yields will be based on actual production, not historical averages. "The announcement between President Trump and President Juncker is these discussions would begin, and while they may love for agriculture to be outside that scope, it's very much in our interests to address that with European Union, particularly on the non-tariff barriers that they continue to promulgate".

In addition, Trump's threat to impose tariffs on European cars was put aside, and the EU planned to buy more USA liquefied natural gas and soybeans.

"The European Union can import more soybeans from the USA and this is happening as we speak", Juncker said. The EU is the second-biggest buyer of the USA oilseed.
