Chicago Police say over a 24 hour period, 34 people were shot and five died.

Gunshots rang out through the streets of Chicago over the weekend, killing at least 11 people dead and wounding another 70, according to police.

Police said in some of the incidents shooters sprayed bullets indiscriminately into large groups in rival territories, where people had gathered for outdoor events. According to reports, a 50-year-old male was killed whilst a 55-year-old woman was wounded in the shooting.

President Trump said a year ago he was sending in federal help to fight the gun violence in the city because it had reached "epidemic proportions".

Although the drop was significant, the total still exceeded the combined the number of killings in New York City and Los Angeles, which are the two U.S. cities bigger than Chicago. "We are a better city".

A police spokesman says the extra police presence at the music festival did not play a role in the violence because officers working it were generally on their regular days off and on OT. But murders were down 23% compared to same point previous year, and the city tallied 19% fewer shooting incidents. Three other people were wounded, one of them critically, and treated at various hospitals.

At 16th Street and Avers Avenue, people in lime green T-shirts from an annual block party in the West Side's Lawndale neighborhood gathered on sidewalks and in streets after a shooting there about midnight.

In just a two-hour stretch in the early hours on Sunday, 25 people were shot in five different mass shootings.

Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson told reporters at a press conference on Monday that the weekend shootings were "not random" and instead were fueled by gang conflicts in the city.
