Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey defended his company's decision not to ban right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his Infowars show, as many other social media platforms have done, saying he did not break any rules. "We know that's hard for many but the reason is simple: he hasn't violated our rules".

In a series of tweets on the subject, Dorsey said Twitter reasoned that it was journalists' job to shine the light of truth on unsubstantiated rumours or sensationalized issues.

"It was the only major social media company to take no action against Jones on Monday", Darcy proclaimed on Tuesday, before adding, "I don't think we are going to be seeing big tech take action against Fox News or the Daily Caller any time soon".

Last week, YouTube also took action against Jones, banning InfoWars from its live-streaming platform for three months.

"When users violate these policies repeatedly, like our policies against hate speech and harassment or our terms prohibiting circumvention of our enforcement measures, we terminate their accounts", YouTube said in a statement to media. "That's not us", Dorsey wrote.

Dorsey also appeared to put the onus of identifying false information on individual users, calling on journalists to "document, validate, and refute such information".

Dorsey said Twitter would hold Jones to the same standard as it does every account. He did this only after learning of Apple's decision, Byers said, explaining why Facebook announced its decision at 3 a.m. PT. YouTube and Spotify reacted similarly. "This is what serves the public conversation best", Dorsey said.

Earlier this week, Apple removed five of six Infowars podcasts from its iTunes and Podcast apps for violating its hate speech guidelines.

Conspiracy theorist and radio talk show host Alex Jones speaks during a rally in support of Donald Trump near the Republican National Convention July 18, 2016 in Cleveland.

"We have taken it down for glorifying violence, which violates our graphic violence policy, and using dehumanizing language to describe people who are transgender, Muslims and immigrants, which violates our hate speech policies", Facebook said.

Following his statements on Twitter, Dorsey directed his followers to an article further explaining the platform's rules.

He then went into more detail with subsequent tweets.
