NBA great Michael Jordan - whom Trump said he preferred in signing off his tweet aimed at James - issued a statement through AP in which he praised the four-time NBA MVP. "Tweet about that. (A) professional athlete doing a good thing for his community".

She also said she is open to visiting the school for underprivileged children James recently opened in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, which he said in an interview that aired last week prioritizes a holistic experience for students.

James, who has been critical of Trump in the past, said during the interview that Trump was using sports to sow divisions in the US.

After sending out - "Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon".

In the tweet, Trump insults Lemon's and James' intelligence and ends it by saying, "I like Mike!"

On Saturday, Lemon fired back, taking a shot at Trump's controversial immigration reform polices that separates young children from their parents and confines them in prison-like conditions. Melania also came forward to show support for James saying that she is open to visiting James' school.

However, Jordan also expressed support for James. Michael Jordan debate, adding "I like Mike!"

James said: "I think racism's always been there". He called him a "bum" after President Trump rescinded a rocky invitation from the Golden State Warriors after winning the National Basketball Association finals.

Elsewhere, Trump's former Democratic rival Hillary Clinton backed James as a "great family man" and "incredible ballplayer" who "gives back to his community, and isn't afraid to speak his mind".

Mr. Trump is traveling to OH on Saturday for a campaign rally. It's unclear if that extends to the First Lady, too.

The first lady's platform, "Be Best", is all about encouraging children to conduct themselves in an honorable manner, and she has made promoting children's welfare a key piece of her time in the White House.

This weekend's controversy was just the latest in a long-running feud between James and Mr Trump.
