Open AI, an artificial intelligence research firm funded by Elon Musk, raised many impressed eyebrows this week when a team of AI bots created by them defeated human players in the popular online multiplayer video game Dota 2.

OpenAI bots played a match (with some significant alterations) against current pro player David "MoonMeander" Tan, former pros Ben "Merlini" Wu, William "Blitz" Lee and Ioannis "Fogged" Lucas and caster Austin "Capitalist" Walsh. From a recap of the competition via The Verge, "The OpenAI Five triumphed in convincing fashion in the first game, not allowing the human players to even destroy one of their defensive towers".

"The clutch of five neural networks that make up OpenAI Five trains using 128,000 CPUs to play 180 years" worth of matches on a daily basis against themselves. After demonstrating its prowess in Dota 2 1v1 games, the newly enhanced "OpenAI Five" has shown that it can thrash even the best human teams. In a press release following the tournament, OpenAI said that they saw the victory as a "step towards advanced AI systems which can handle the complexity and uncertainty of the real world". The team of bots calculated a 2.9% chance of winning before the start of the game based on its heroes' lineup.

Every member of Team Human were selected on the criteria of being within the 99th percentile of players, which makes sense considering that a lot of them used to be active pro players. The humans recovered a little in game two, conquering one tower, but still getting demolished.

OpenAI's initiatives with Dota 2 began in March past year. This gave the AI a sufficient handicap for the human players to take the final win. This year's event is set to take place between 20-25 August in Vancouver.

Ahead of the three-game battle, OpenAI in a blog post explained, "Because our training system Rapid is very general, we were able to teach OpenAI Five many complex skills since June simply by integrating new features and randomizations". Last month, the company released footage of a robotic arm manipulating a cube with uncanny dexterity that was trained using reinforcement learning algorithm as the OpenAI Five.
