Rescuers dig through quake rubble for aunt of Indonesian sprint star

The north of Lombok has been devastated by the magnitude 7.0 quake that struck on Sunday night, damaging thousands of buildings and killing at least 98 people.

Almost 1,500 people have been injured, with 156,000 displaced after the tremors caused extensive damage to their homes.

Hundreds of tourists and workers were still struggling to get off three outlying resort islands where power was cut off and hotels and hostels were damaged.

Villagers in Pemenang on Lombok's northwestern shoulder heard cries for help emerging from the mangled concrete of a collapsed minimart on Tuesday and alerted rescuers. "Gili Air has run out of food and water so they have come to us", she messaged, adding later that she had been taken on a boat to the main island and would go on to Bali.

But with not enough boats to evacuate tourists quickly and too few planes to fly them out of Lombok, many visitors were forced to wait for hours or camp on beaches and the floor of the global airport in Mataram.

Quakes continued to rattle the island, including a 5.5-magnitude tremor at around 2 a.m., the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.

In the villages of northern Lombok, close to the epicentre of Sunday night's natural disaster, it is clear the government has been slow to reach some of the hardest hit areas due to a lack of infrastructure.

Nugroho said authorities deployed ships to evacuate people from the three islands.

A spokesman for Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Arifin Hadi said Australia, through the department of Foreign Affairs and the Australian Red Cross, had promised $150,000, China's embassy had donated $US100,000, USAID had given $US60,000 and the International Red Cross 211,000 Swiss francs.

Ghozali's assessment of the likely impact on tourism to Lombok was backed by Australian-based Indonesia expert Matthew Busch, a non-resident fellow at the Lowy Institute, who said the effect of the most recent quake, and another one a week ago, could be severe for the local tourism sector.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr O'Sullivan said that around 30 of those were evacuated on Sunday night but the remainder were on the beach in some cases for up to 36 hours waiting to be evacuated.
