Where can you actually find $1 beer in Ontario?

The Ontario government says it will offer "non-financial incentives" to brewers who sell their beer for $1 once the province's buck-a-beer plan is in place later this month.

Ontario previously had buck-a-bottle beer but the then-Liberal government quietly hiked the minimum price in 2008, citing its "social responsibility" mandate. He also indicated there are no tax incentives involved and tax payers' money will not be used.

The Progressive Conservative plan will lower the minimum price of a bottle or can of beer with an alcohol volume below 5.6 per cent to $1 from $1.25 starting August 27 - a few days before the Labour Day weekend.

Barley Days Brewery - one of the first breweries to open in Prince Edward County - has noted they plan to release a $1 beer created specifically for that price point. "I think people in Ontario are mature enough.to know when they've had one too many".

A buck a beer is nearly here.

Currently, the retail price floor sits at $1.25 and while brewers won't be mandated to lower prices, the "Buck-a-Beer Challenge" encourages Ontario brewers to "receive LCBO promotional considerations such as limited-time discounts, in-store displays on end aisles and shelf extenders, or advertising in LCBO flyers and newspaper inserts".

Beers being sold for $1 will still be subject to a 5-cent deposit and tax.

Annual indexing for all packaged beer will be suspended to maintain the $1.00 minimum floor price over time.

Some opposing breweries, such as Great Lakes Brewery, have spoken out against the initiative.

The Premier did not comment on Tuesday on his larger campaign plan to allow for the wider sale of alcohol in Ontario, including expanding beer and wine sales to corner stores and big box stores.
