Aftershock measuring 6.2 is third quake to hit Lombok in week

A strong quake with a magnitude of 6.2 hit Indonesia's Lombok island on Thursday, causing some buildings to collapse, according to witnesses and the Southeast Asian nation's meteorology and geophysics agency.

Lombok was hit a week earlier by a 6.4 quake that killed 16 people.

The USGS said the latest quake had a magnitude of 5.9 - there are reports it brought down some buildings.

Reuters witnesses reporting on the aftermath of Sunday's quake in the north of the island said buildings and walls that had already been weakened collapsed, and people ran out onto roads even as rocks tumbled down from hillsides. It did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, the agency added.

Journalists reporting on the aftermath of the fatal quake saw people running into the streets in panic.

He has said several times that the number of deaths will increase.

Authorities are gathering information from family members with missing relatives to determine how many more people may have been in the buildings when they collapsed, national search and rescue agency spokesman Yusuf Latif told AFP.

It is likely to have been the strongest of the more than 340 aftershocks in the area since Sunday.

The quake caused Lombok residents, who have been staying in shelters following Sunday's mangnitude-7 quake, to panic and rush out of their tents, KompasTV reported.

The island was still recovering after two other recent earthquakes when the tremor happened.

But Mr Sutopo said some areas in the north had still not received any aid.

A field hospital has also been established near an evacuation centre catering to more than 500 people in the village of Tanjung.

Thousands of tourists visiting Lombok - as well as the nearby Gili Islands and Bali - have been evacuated or have chosen to leave since the weekend. Tens of thousands are now sleeping out in the open or in the ruins of their homes.
