Fleetwood, the English golfer who finished 12th at Carnoustie last month, has since received his prize, but only after it appeared in the bank account of a Florida-based golf teacher of the same name.

Imagine waking up to $150,000 being deposited in your bank account and having no idea why you were suddenly a little heavier in the wallet.

Break30, aka Greg Thorner, posted on Twitter a friend of his made the windfall. The only problem? It was the wrong Tommy Fleetwood.

The European Tour apologized to Fleetwood, the one playing this week at the PGA Championship at Bellerive, calling it a "clerical error".

"It looks pretty genuine and they (the European Tour) are looking into it and I'm sure they'll feel pretty bad about it".

Fleetwood, who is also a caddie, told Reuters he had been trying to get in touch with the 27-year-old Englishman. That's when I realized that it must be for the other Tommy Fleetwood and I quickly worked out that it was his Open winnings.

Alderweireld 'all day' over Maguire, says Man Utd legend Ferdinand
In football, you need time to work and players on the pitch to work and we didn't have until now. I repeat: "pre-season hard when you don't have your players to work, as simple as that".

The much older Fleetwood has also been a pro golfer - he's now attempting to get onto the senior tour.

The American Tommy Fleetwood shared a screenshot showing he had been credited $154,480 by the European Tour.

"It was only for $14 or something but he called it up and looked at his statement, and that's when he shouted 'Holy smoke, I've just had US$154,000 paid into my account!'"

It may have been easy to miss for the more accomplished Fleetwood, whose career earnings are listed at $20.32 million on the European Tour's website.

"I told him he should keep it", Thorner, a golf school owner, told USA TODAY Sports.

'I wouldn't even know if I'd been paid or not because I don't really look.
