Gates, meanwhile, wearing dark blue suit, white shirt and red tie, cut a lonely figure at the witness stand, blinking hard.

Greg Andres, an attorney with special counsel Robert Mueller's office, said the prosecution is running ahead of schedule. In addition, he testified, he did not submit the required forms at Manafort's direction.

"While the firm believes that her actions were related only to work she performed for Mr. Manafort, and that no other client was affected, a detailed, independent internal review is being conducted to confirm that her activity was isolated", the firm said in the statement.

For the previous two days in court, Gates has testified that he and Manafort committed bank and tax fraud together.

In fact, his name was barely mentioned in the first five days of the tax and bank fraud case brought against his former campaign chairman.

But Weissmann has notably not questioned any witnesses at Manafort's Virginia trial.

Gates admitted to hiding his own income from the IRS in offshore bank accounts.

An FBI forensic accountant also testified $60 million flowed through Manafort's accounts from 2010 to 2014, and he spent $15 million of that on homes, clothes, and personal purchases.

In blistering questioning, a defense lawyer accused the protege of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort of being immersed in "so many lies" he can't remember them all, as he tried to undermine the credibility of the government's star witness in Manafort's fraud trial. The special counsel's office has pushed back against the leak allegation, and while an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent testified he was present at a meeting with AP reporters about Manafort, the agent said the AP was offered little more than a "no comment" and an acknowledgement that their reporters were generally on track. The man, Konstantin Kilimnik, is charged along with Manafort with witness tampering in a separate case.

Until the trial for Paul Manafort started, Andrew Weissmann had been one of the most prominent members of the prosecution team. U.S. District court Judge T.S. Ellis III presides. He finished his testimony Wednesday, Day 7 of the trial.

Stan Collymore predicts where Liverpool FC and Man United will finish
But we don't believe a lot in the winter market and for sure next season it will be better for him", Mourinho said after beating City to his signature.

Ellis has repeatedly pushed prosecutors to whittle down their case to save time.

The exchange concluded Gates' appearance in the Manafort trial.

Gates, 46, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with the government as it prosecutes Manafort for allegedly evading United States taxes on tens of millions of dollars earned from political consulting work they did together in Ukraine from 2006 to 2014.

Downing said that the question, which came one day after Gates admitted to having a single affair ten years ago, was relevant because it could prove that Gates had lied to investigators.

But at another point Wednesday, Gates attempted to express remorse from the stand, saying "I've made many mistakes over many years". And Manafort made millions of dollars working as a political consultant for a pro-Russia party in Ukraine before he worked for the Trump campaign, which could raise questions about Trump's friendly rhetoric towards the country. Gates said that these loans were actually income.

The star witness in Paul Manafort's financial fraud trial says the former Trump campaign chairman told him to be truthful about offshore shell companies and bank accounts during a 2014 interview with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "You told me you were on top of this", he wrote Gates in April 2015.

Defense attorneys then used several hours of cross-examination to try to damage Gates' credibility in the eyes of jurors.

The interview was part of an FBI investigation that sought to recover assets looted from the Ukrainian government under former president Viktor Yanukovych.

The prosecution's case against Manafort doesn't rest exclusively on Gates.

But the grilling got more intense, and personal, when Mr Downing pressed Mr Gates about a "secret life" he said was funded by embezzlement, including an extra-marital affair that Mr Gates himself acknowledged.
