North Korea foreign minister visits Iran

In an interview with the Iran newspaper published on Wednesday, Mr Zarif said the Trump administration's stated aim of cutting Iranian oil exports to zero was "meaningless" and "impossible".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has vowed that Iran will stand firm against threats by the United States over oil shipments, after Washington reimposed economic sanctions on the Islamic republic.

The US is now also pushing Pyongyang to scrap its nuclear capabilities after Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un agreed a vague commitment to "denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" at their landmark summit in June.

The ministry also reminded Washington that Beijing follows a consistent policy of opposing any "unilateral sanctions and long-armed jurisdiction" indiscriminately practiced by the USA against members of the global community.

The Commander-in-Chief's stark warning comes on the heels of his administration's decision to re-impose tough penalties on the Islamic Republic just months after the United States withdrew from the botched nuclear agreement.

Mr Trump abandoned the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which saw Iran limit its controversial nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief, in May.

Iran's currency has been in steady decline since the start of the year as the country anxiously awaits the re-imposition of full USA sanctions, trading at record lows and losing almost two-thirds of its value against the dollar.

Iran's currency has lost around half its value since Trump announced the United States would withdraw from the nuclear pact, but has surged since Sunday, following the arrest of the central bank's currency chief and new plans being announced. "The countries now the USA is negotiating with have told Washington that they will continue their oil purchases from Iran", he explained.

In a commentary published by the Guardian on Wednesday, Khoshroo stressed that by ditching the nuclear deal with Iran and sanctioning countries engaged in business transactions with the country, the USA is violating UNSC Resolution 2231.

"As a result of these measures, the USA has been isolated".

'Isolating Iran could boost radical and fundamentalist forces, ' he said, adding that 'chaos in Iran, as we have experienced in Iraq or Libya, would further destabilise an already troubled region'.

"China's commercial cooperation with Iran is open and transparent, reasonable, fair and lawful, not violating any United Nations Security Council resolutions", the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement to Reuters.
