It is no secret that Mourinho has been keen to add to his squad and would have liked to add a defender.

Jose Mourinho has repeatedly expressed his desire to strengthen Manchester United's defence after they finished second in the Premier League last term.

Mourinho guided Manchester United to their best Premier League finish since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, but the 55-year-old coach has insisted that he wants to sign two more players before the end of the transfer window.

It was also a good day for Leicester City, who, not only managed to keep hold of Harry Maguire amid reported interest from United, but also brought in the well-regarded young defender Caglar Soyuncu from Freiburg, tied Jamie Vardy down to a new deal and signed Croatia Under-21 worldwide Filip Benkovic. "It is time for me to stop thinking about the market", he said.

United's boss, about to begin his third season at the helm at Old Trafford, has cut a disgruntled figure during the summer, apparently unhappy with the club's transfer window activity.

Both clubs finished below United last season in the Premier League yet Mourinho claims they are projected as "serial winners" despite failing to land a trophy since 2012 and 2008 respectively.

"The information I have is no", Mourinho said at his pre-match press conference when asked if he expected any new arrivals on Thursday.

They added Chris Woakes in the squad for Stokes and highest run-scorer in the County Championship Ollie Pope for Malan. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the Test match and that could mean an unchanged Indian seam attack.

"My view is that, first of all, is hard for me to believe we finished second", he said.

"It is hard to believe that we finished second". Mourinho also has selection problems for the Leicester game, with Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic, Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia and Dalot ruled out because of injuries and Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini not considered fully fit after being given extra time off to recover from the World Cup.

"Is hard for me to understand, to feel, to believe we finish second".

Mourinho also needs to check on the fitness of those that returned late from the World Cup.

Marcus Rashford, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku returned early and should be available. In football you need time to work and players on the pitch to work and we didn't have that until now.

"We have only seen him when he has appeared in front of the TV cameras this summer and heard what he has told the media, and I suspect he will behave very differently on the training ground with his players".
