"If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away", said Nunes, R-Calif.

Rosenstein, who appointed and now supervises Mueller, defended the special counsel investigation when he was brought before the House Judiciary Committee earlier this summer.

He also said that impeaching Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - which he favors, in theory - would delay the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The counterintelligence analyst then explained how he really feels about the House Intelligence Committee chairman: "If you gave Nunes the "f 'and the 'a", he couldn't spell 'fact'". "We have to keep the majority".

"If [Jeff] Sessions won't un-recuse, and Mueller won't clear the president, we're the only ones", Nunes said, according to the audio.

Asked about the the impeachment plans, Nunes told a questioner that "it's a bit complicated" because "we only have so many months left". Nunes appeared to say at the meeting that it was important the GOP maintain control in Congress after the November election so that they continue to check on the Russian Federation probe.

It's also worth noting that Mueller and Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein, who now oversees the investigation, are both Republicans who were highly respected across the board prior to the start of the investigation.

Nunes, along with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), introduced articles of impeachment against Rosenstein last week.

At one point you can hear the Congresswoman chime in when Nunes was responding to a question from the audience about impeaching Rosenstein.

"It's a matter of timing", Nunes said.

He said everything would have to be dropped if impeachment was up for a vote.

"Do you want them to drop everything and not confirm the Supreme Court justice, the new Supreme Court justice?" he added.

Nunes also noted that while he supports impeaching Rosenstein, he knows it would be unpopular, and can't do that until after the election: "I've said publicly Rosenstein deserves to be impeached... the question is the timing of it right before the election". Since Jeff Sessions is recused on the matter of the Russian Federation probe, the responsibility of deciding whether or not to fire Mueller, if Trump were to ask for this, falls to Rosenstein.

"Now if somebody thinks that my campaign or Cathy's campaign is colluding with the Chinese, or you name the country, hey, could happen, it would be a very bad thing if Cathy was getting secrets from the Portuguese, let's say, just because I'm Portuguese, my family was", Nunes said, using McMorris Rodgers as an example in his hypothetical.
