North Korea Denounces US Over Sanctions

North Korea said in a statement on Thursday that "some high-level officials within the US administration" were making "desperate attempts at intensifying the worldwide sanctions and pressure".

In a statement, the North Korean foreign ministry accused the United States of "insulting the dialogue partner and throwing cold water over our honest efforts for building confidence which can be seen as a precondition for implementing" the agreement between Trump and Kim.

North Korea top leader Kim Jong Un met US President Donald Trump in June in Singapore, where they signed a joint statement, agreeing to push for establishing diplomatic ties, building peace on the Korean Peninsula and completely denuclearizing the peninsula together.

Kim and Trump promised to work to end North Korea's weapons programs at their summit in Singapore, but the two countries have been struggling to reach a detailed accord to meet that goal.

National security adviser John Bolton earlier this week said North Korea had not begun the progress, while USA envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, said Washington was "not willing to wait for too long" for the North.

Bolton, in an interview on Fox News, said U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was prepared to return to North Korea for another meeting with Kim.

North Korea's foreign ministry said on Thursday it had stopped missile and nuclear tests and dismantled "the nuclear test ground", yet the United States still insisted on "denuclearisation first".

With such moves, "one can not expect any progress in the implementation of North Korea-US joint statement including the denuclearization, and furthermore, there is no guarantee that the hard-won atmosphere of stability on the Korean Peninsula will continue", said the spokesperson.

The White House and State Department did not immediately return requests for comment. It also claims that "high-level officials within the US administration are making baseline allegations against [North Korea] and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions and pressure". North Korea did not provide a reason for calling off the inspection, Yonhap reported.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri traveled this week to Iran, where President Hassan Rouhani told him the United States can not be trusted after the Trump administration reneged on a 2015 deal to lift sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's own nuclear program.
