Kerala: Incessant rains force authorities to open three shutters of Idukki Dam

All the five gates of the Idukki (Cherurhoni) Dam in Kerala have been opened, underlining just how serious the conditions are in the coastal state that has witnessed incessant heavy rain and flooding. A road was washed away in floods in Malappuram.

The decision to suspend the arrival operation was taken after four shutters of the Idamalayar dam were opened this morning to release excess water. Now three of the five shutters are open.

The shutters of the Idamalayar dam were opened at 5 am with the released water flowing all the way down to Ernakulam district and swelling the Periyar river and the adjoining Aluva town.

Around 600 cusecs of water were discharged from the Idamalayar dam this morning, with the water level rising to 169.95 metres against the full reservoir level (FRL) of 169m.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the Kerala chief minister on Thursday in the wake of heavy rains and floods in the state, and offered all possible assistance to those affected. "We will open one shutter of the Idukki dam also". Residents on either side of the dam have been advised to remain cautious.

Scores of passengers were left stranded as the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) was forced to partially shut down operations due to flooding on Thursday.

Earlier Vijayan held an emergency meeting here to assess the situation and appointed senior official P.H. Kurian to lead the rescue and relief operations. Dozens of families have been evacuated. All passenger trains on the Kanjikode-Walayar stretch in the Palakkad-Podanur section were disrupted because of the rain.
