La Liga players ask for USA match to be scrapped

The Spanish players' union (AFE) held a meeting on Wednesday with a host of top players, including Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos and Barcelona's Sergio Busquets.

Association president David Aganzo said the league should have consulted with the players before making "the business decision" to play in the USA, adding that the footballers "are not for sale". With their decisions, La Liga are distancing the fans from the players, something that damages the show and the essence of football. "We are exhausted of this and have much to say", Aganzo said. "Besides the game in the United States, we are dealing with calendars and schedules that only benefit the exportation of football but not the fans or the players".

The players were reported to be "outraged" at the decision to move a match to America and could go on strike if it is not reversed, although that remains a last resort.

Hamburg's German head coach Christian Titz addresses Hamburg's players after the German first division Bundesliga football match Hamburger SV vs Borussia Moenchengladbach in Hamburg, northern Germany, on May 12, 2018. He said a meeting with La Liga president Javier Tebas is scheduled for next month.

La Liga is keen to compete with the Premier League in the lucrative North American television market.

Aganzo said the league's decision to play in the USA was just the final straw. I feel it's the time for renovation.

"The players are again being punished by the kick-off times of certain matches, which can damage their health because of the weather conditions or the lack of recovery time", it said.

The late kickoffs produced low attendances in several matches, even when Madrid and Barcelona were involved.
