Wentz cleared for full practice

The third-year quarterback, who is recovering from a December surgery to fix a wrecked knee, has been cleared to "resume 11-on-11 team work when the defending Super Bowl champions return to practice Sunday", Mortensen wrote after consulting with team sources.

This is obviously a very encouraging development.

This has to be a shot in the arm for Wentz, who seemed discouraged as he was telling us last week that it was going to be very close for him to be cleared to play in that first game against the Atlanta Falcons on September 6.

Now that he's been cleared for contact, the team must feel that his knee is able to withstand pretty much anything he'd normally see on the gridiron on any given Sunday. Wentz said the same when asked about his status last week.

We've worked on our fitness, on our mind set, cutting down on loose deliveries. "It's a delight to watch when they're running in". Both Vince and Bairstow were selected in a 14-man squad, with the Hampshire batsman replacing uncapped Essex seamer Jamie Porter.

Wentz said "I feel really good where I'm at" but stuck with his assessment last week that it will be "close" whether he is cleared for the regular-season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on September 6. ("A little moisture never hurt anybody.") "I think you guys saw all camp me moving around and everything". I want to be a full participant in every single thing, but that wasn't totally my call.

Wentz and coach Doug Pederson both hinted earlier this week that they expected this clearance to happen relatively soon.

"I felt good", Wentz said Monday about Sunday's practice in the rain.

It is still unclear if Wentz will be ready for the opener, but Saturday's report is an encouraging sign for the birds.
