Asylum seekers on the run in the Daintree

Locals they saw people fleeing into the forest after their vessel ran aground near Daintree River in the tropical far north of Queensland state on Sunday.

The ABC added that two others, including the boat's captain, were still missing.

Police were this morning searching vehicles and caravans at the main checkpoint at the Daintree River ferry - the only crossing point on the crocodile-infested waters.

The department did not respond to questions of whether the vessel found off Cape Kimberley was carrying asylum-seekers, illegal migrants or fishermen.

It is the first people-smuggling boat to enter Australia in more than 1400 days.
