West Nile is spread through mosquito bites, and the peak season for it is late summer and early fall.

A Cambridge woman has been diagnosed with West Nile virus, one of four human cases of the mosquito-borne illness reported so far in MA, the city's Public Health Department said Tuesday.

With Milner Stadium in the middle alert zone, high school football games this week mean there will be a lot more people in the area than just residents.

Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets and barrels. The most effective way to avoid WNV and other mosquito-borne disease is to prevent mosquito bites.

Additional traps were set in a six-county region of Doddridge, Harrison, Taylor, Marion, Monongalia and Preston, and while other mosquitoes did test positive for the virus, there are no human cases of West Nile.

"While most people who are infected recover without any long-term problems, some develop a more severe infection that can lead to complications and even death - especially those over 50 years of age", Byers said.
