Second Boston resident diagnosed with West Nile virus

The Region of Waterloo Public Health is reminding those spending time outdoors to use caution after two more mosquito pools tested positive for West Nile virus. Three human cases of West Nile Virus Fever, the milder form of the disease, have been confirmed in Tarrant County this year, according to health department records.

Last year IDPH reported the first human West Nile virus death in IL on September 29, 2017.

With the number of reported cases rising in recent days, state and city health officials are urging people to take precautions to protect themselves and to mitigate the further spread of the disease.

To prevent catching West Nile, you should take measures to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Symptoms include headache, body aches, joint pains and fatigue. Officials have also warned that they expect higher numbers of human West Nile cases this season.

In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur.

Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, and officials said it is especially important to wear repellent and long-sleeved shirts and long trousers during these times of day. Also, when outdoors, use of an an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, 2-undecanone, or IR3535 is recommended.

Only about 20% of those who get infected with West Nile will notice any symptoms.

Eliminate all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, such as old tires, buckets and other receptacles, or refresh the water in bird baths, flowerpots and wading pools every couple days.
