In August, Musk told The New York Times he was exhausted from too much work and difficulty sleeping in an interview that sharpened questions about his mental stability.

Rogan asked Musk about The Boring Company, which Musk said started as a " joke", mostly borne out of his desperation to fix L.A.'s notoriously bad traffic problem. "Or is that a cigar?" At one point, Rogan, who was smoking cannabis, invited Elon Musk to take a puff. We're not sure what to make of it, but there's something vaguely disturbing about the whole exchange.

Elon Musk has added another bit of weird behaviour to the list by smoking a joint during a live interview.

A lawsuit filed Thursday accused Musk of trying to burn short-sellers (those betting that Tesla's share price would decrease) in the market.

"I want to be clear that I believe strongly in Tesla, its mission, and its future prospects, and I have no disagreements with Tesla's leadership or its financial reporting", the company quoted Morton as saying in a filing. Over the past year, the company burned through roughly $2.4 billion of cash, with interest expense totaling $577 million, according to the research firm CreditSights.

Separately, human resources chief Gabrielle Toledano told Bloomberg she planned to exit the company, not returning from a leave of absence.

In an email to employees, CEO Elon Musk said Toledano was on leave to "spend more time with her family and has made a decision to continue doing so for personal reasons".

Later in August, Sarah O'Brien, Tesla's vice-president of communications, resigned after almost two years with the company - a departure that had reportedly been planned for several months and preceded the drama over the tweets.

In July he shocked investors by announcing on Twitter that he had funding secured to take his auto firm Tesla private.

Morton is a veteran in the tech sector, serving as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Seagate before starting his employment at Tesla.

Critics say that his behavior has become reckless and that Musk should focus on running Tesla, which is facing intense pressure to speed up production of electric vehicles. Unsworth threatened to sue and Musk subsequently apologized.

A Tesla spokesperson wasn't immediately available to comment.

"The judgment of the chief executive is coming under scrutiny", said Christopher Sullivan, chief investment officer at United Nations Federal Credit Union.

Mr Unsworth, from St Albans in Hertfordshire, is now reportedly planning to sue Musk for what his lawyer called his "ongoing campaign of publishing vile and false accusations".

Several media outlets incorrectly reported that the U.S. Air Force was reviewing Musk's security clearance after the video of him smoking published online, since his company SpaceX provides services to the government, Reuters reported.
