China will respond if the United States takes any new steps on trade, the foreign ministry said on Monday, after President Donald Trump warned he was ready to slap tariffs on virtually all Chinese imports into the United States.

Ford on August 31 said it was dropping plans to ship the Focus Active from China to America, citing the Trump administration's new tariffs.

As The New York Times notes, it was the second such tweet in as many days, after Trump on Saturday called on Apple to begin making iPhones in the US if it wanted to avoid import tariffs. This week, Apple said in a regulatory filing that the tariffs could drive up the cost of various products (and/or their components) by 25 per cent, saying that $US200 ($281) billion in proposed tariffs would hurt the USA much more than China.

In a follow-up tweet, the president argued that vehicles sent from the China previously faced a 25 percent tax, while "if China sells a auto into the US, there is a tax of 2%".

Levine later expanded that last point with a tweet highlighting how large Ford's manufacturing presence is in the U.S. Mr. Trump insinuated in a weekend Twitter post that Ford would build the small vehicle in US instead of importing it from China.

Trump's comment came after Apple told U.S. trade officials on Friday that proposed tariffs by Washington in an escalating trade war with China would affect prices for a "wide range" of Apple items, including the Apple Watch.
