'Extremely Dangerous' Florence On Track to Hit East Coast As Major Hurricane

Gov. Larry Hogan made the announcement at a news conference Monday.

In Guam, Typhoon Mangkhut - a Category 4 storm - narrowly missed dealing a direct blow to the island.

He says coastal and low-lying areas are of particular concern, as well as parts of the state that already have received substantial rainfall over the last few days.

Florence is heading toward the southeastern US - with an unusual journey.

Stoney urged residents to prepare now by gathering supplies, including nonperishable food, water, flashlights, and batteries.

The storm may sit over parts of the mid-Atlantic for days, like Harvey did in Texas past year, bringing major flooding to an area that has already seen above-average rainfall in recent months.

With maximum sustained winds of 220 km/h, Florence was due to grow even stronger before making landfall on Thursday, mostly likely in southeastern North Carolina near the SC border, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. Typically, local governments in North Carolina make the call on evacuations.

While a developed storm would pose more of a threat to coastal Texas, it could still turn into a very unsafe flooding event for an already-drenched San Antonio. Communities along a stretch of coastline that is vulnerable to rising sea levels due to climate change prepared to evacuate.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam's office described Florence as possibly the state's "most significant hurricane event in decades", warning of "catastrophic inland flooding, high winds and possible widespread power outages". A year ago, people would have laughed off such a forecast, but the European model was accurate in predicting 60 inches of rain for Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area, so "you start to wonder what these models know that we don't", said University of Miami hurricane expert Brian McNoldy. Forecasters also cautioned that Hurricane Florence will "remain an extremely risky hurricane" as it tracks towards the mainland U.S.

Hurricanes require warm ocean water to form, so ocean season comes when the Atlantic Ocean is at its warmest. Main impacts with these storm are going to life-threatening storm surge, flooding, damaging hurricane-force winds, and risky rip currents along the East Coast.

According to N.H.C., at 5:00 a.m. today the center of Tropical Storm Isaac was located near latitude 14.6 North, longitude 48.1 West. Isaac is moving toward the west near 14 miles per hour (22 km/h).
