2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia have suffered the biggest defeat in their history as Spain humiliated them with a 6-nil thrashing in the UEFA Nations League.

Dani Carvajal centred from the right wing and Saul arrived with flawless timing and at pace to head home in Elche, the town where he was born.

Spain have rattled in the goals against Croatia to take charge of their Nations League group.

"It's a great challenge to play against Luka in the Spanish league and it's even better to play with him for our country", Rakitic said. We had very good concentration.

Spain made three changes to the team that won at Wembley, bringing in Valencia defender Jose Gaya and Real Madrid pair Dani Ceballos and Asensio.

Under the guidance of new head coach Luis Enrique, La Roja have adopted a new tactical approach that saw Marcos Alonso, Saul and Iago Aspas all play a starring role against the Three Lions within a new-look starting XI.

The two nations are facing each other for the seventh time, with Croatia taking the last meeting - a 2-1 win at Euro 2016. Carvajal also provided the cross from which Saul headed the opener, giving Spain a huge injection of belief and rattling the visitors, who moments later conceded possession in midfield before Asensio smashed the loose ball home from long range.

It was the biggest defeat ever for Croatia, which was playing its first competitive game since reaching the World Cup final in Russian Federation.

Spain, meanwhile, is coming off a 2-1 victory over England in its first Nations League match.

Marco Asensio doubled the lead for the hosts in the 33rd minute with a 25-yard rocket that screamed into the top corner after some sloppiness at the back from Croatia, 2-0.

"That's why we want to win every match, but we are playing against a Spain team which didn't meet their expectations at the World Cup and are highly motivated now".
