The Athletic reported former assistant GM Julien BriseBois is expected to take over.

Yzerman will move to a senior adviser role working under BriseBois and he said he was "100 per cent committed" to the Lightning this season. Then-owner Mike Ilitch reportedly wanted to move Holland to an executive role to make room for Yzerman, but Holland declined the promotion.

Yzerman, 53, was hired by the Lightning as GM in 2010 and has one year remaining on his contract with Tampa Bay. For a number of years, he has been considered a future National Hockey League general manager, and owner Jeff Vinik said the Lightning were lucky BriseBois wasn't hired by someone else.

Of course, Yzerman is best known for his Hall of Fame career with the Red Wings. Yzerman told the Lightning players that he's "going home to Detroit", according to Helene St. James of the Free Press.

April 7, 2014: Yzerman signs four-year contract extension with Lightning that runs through 2018-19 season.

Regardless, this is a pretty stunning development in the hockey world given how well Yzerman has done in building a contender in Tampa. The Lightning lost to the Washington Capitals, the eventual Stanley Cup champions, in the Eastern Conference final. Most recently, Yzerman made the blockbuster acquisition of Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh at February's trade deadline and inked Nitkita Kucherov to an eight-year, $76 million extension in July.

"Over the course of the last couple of years, there's been moments to reflect on my situation", Yzerman said.

BriseBois told reporters he "would love for" Yzerman to stay in this advisory role with Tampa Bay beyond this season, but Yzerman acknowledged that he's unsure of his future.
