Residents are running out of time to evacuate before Hurricane Florence roars in to North and SC bringing potentially deadly flooding, officials warn. In South Carolina, close to the Georgia line, Beaufort County emergency chief Neil Baxley told residents they need to prepare again for the worst just in case.

Past history suggests this might prove disastrous.

Just a year ago, Hurricane Harvey caused $125 million in damage and Irma caused $50 million, making them two of the five most expensive storms in more than a century.

Ocean City emergency management officials are continuing to monitor Hurricane Florence, which is now showing a southern track and steering farther away from the Maryland coastline. "Also, most storms coming into the Carolinas tend to move northward, and this storm looks like it's going to stall over the region and potentially bring tremendous, life-threatening flooding", AccuWeather meteorologist Marshall Moss said on September 11.

Hurricane Florence is expected to cause devastation when it makes landfall later today or early tomorrow, with "life-threatening storm surge" and intense rainfall.

Forecasts generally project Florence to make landfall in southeastern North Carolina on Friday as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane.

"Watch out, America!" Gerst, who joined the crew of the International Space Station (ISS) in June, said Wednesday via a tweet featuring pictures he took of Hurricane Florence.

At 2:00 pm (1800 GMT), the eye of the storm was 435 miles (700 kms) southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, moving northwest at 16 mph (26 kph). Florence is now expected to make a slightly earlier arrival near the border of North and SC early Friday.

"We have to be careful we're not asking them to come back to Beaufort County through a storm", he said.

Panovich: The other interesting thing is in Charlotte our biggest impacts might be felt more Friday night into Saturday, and we will certainly see some wind on Friday but I think the rain may be kind of scattered about on Friday and the heavy stuff doesn't really move in until Saturday.

Other forecasters have predicted that Florence could also stall over Virginia, the Carolinas, and several mid-Atlantic states for possibly several days, which would bring catastrophic flooding to the area.
