Mental health problems rampant at workplace

It comes as new figures revealed nearly half of all United Kingdom workers had experienced poor mental health in their current job.

Following a study that indicates almost half of employees in the United Kingdom are suffering from mental health problems in the workplace, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, has launched a mental health website which he unveiled at an event in Bristol on Tuesday.

Poor mental health affects half of all employees, according to a survey of 44,000 people carried out by the mental health charity Mind. As many as 300,000 people lose their job each year due to a mental health problem.

Farmer added on the dedication that not just Prince William, but all the Royals, have to mental health awareness: "My firm belief is that all of [the royals] and particularly the Duke - in this context - have done a lot of background work and really thought about this issue and their commitment is 100 per cent real". Furthermore poor mental health at work costs the United Kingdom economy between £72bn and £99bn.

The Duke of Cambridge will be unveiling the website today at an event in Bristol. Managers who felt their employer supported their mental health, or actively learnt about supporting team members with mental health problems, were far more likely to feel confident in promoting staff wellbeing. Whether work environments contribute to the degradation of mental health or exacerbates conditions outside of the person's control, there's never been a more pertinent time for tools available to help those in work.

Half of all employees are impacted by poor mental health. The UK-wide portal is a free resource for both employers and employees.

The research comes just days after the Yorkshire Post revealed the increasing toll on the mental health of the region's emergency workers.

The charity - along with The Royal Foundation, Heads Together and 11 other organisations - has created an online resource for employers and employees with information, advice, resources and training that workplaces can use to improve wellbeing.
