While Hurricane Florence has sparked state of emergency and mass evacuation, a very unfortunate weather graphic has managed to put a smile on those preparing for the storm.

When the National Hurricane Updates shared a map of the category four hurricane, dubbed "the storm of a lifetime", on Facebook, people were quick to compare the pink round-headed shape displaying the devastation to something a lot less serious. Residents in coastal areas should follow evacuation orders from local officials because of the potential for life-threatening storm surge flooding.

Myrtle Beach's Ocean Boulevard was practically empty at midday on Wednesday, September 12, as the SC town prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Florence. Rather than pushing up toward western Virginia, the storm's center is now predicted to move across the middle of SC.

The hurricane center is forecasting the storm to hover near the coast Saturday with winds of around 80 miles per hour (130 kph) before landfall, but with rainfall in the 20 to 30 inches (50 to 75 centimeter) range and up to 13 feet (nearly 4 meters) of storm surge. SC announced the decision on Wednesday.

The US president said he had spoken to governors of threatened states, adding that the "federal government stands by, ready to assist 24/7".

The Atlantic hurricane is located about 450km east-southeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, packing maximum sustained winds of 175km/h, the NHC said.
