Verizon 5G Home Service Arrives October 1

In its 5G Home announcement Verizon said it expects to be the first carrier to offer 5G mobile service, though its rivals may have something to say about that.

Verizon 5G Home will be available starting october 1 in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento, though not everyone in these cities will be able to get access to this home internet service.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg said in a press release 5G service will "expand digital access for underserved communities and boost the city's efforts to establish itself as a center for autonomous vehicle testing". "Verizon 5G Home is ideal for consumers looking to "cut the cord" or upgrade from their current cable service". It's unclear if those are just download speeds or both up and down.

Verizon 5G Home won't have hardware costs and should produce "typical network speeds around 300Mbps" with peak speeds at "nearly 1 Gig". I'm sure that's something early adopters will put to the test. While the service won't be using the mobile 5G standard, Verizon will utilize mmWave technology which uses spectrum between 30 and 300 GHz.

The effects of high-speed 5G go beyond homes. Verizon says its technicians will install the necessary equipment and configure the Verizon router free of charge.

Existing Verizon Wireless customers with a "qualifying smartphone plan" that live in one of these markets will be able to sign up for Verizon 5G Home at a cost of $50 per month starting September 13at 8am EST by visiting This is as much about promoting its 5G network as it is about selling people 5G home internet.

Customers will also get three free months of YouTube TV and a free Apple TV 4K or Google Chromecast Ultra, Verizon said.
