Overall, Florence is about 644 kilometres wide (400 miles).

On Thursday evening, Florence's forward movement was just 5mph.

The briefing said Florence "is a large hurricane" with hurricane-force winds extending 80 miles from its center and tropical storm-force winds extending 195 miles from the eye of the storm.

The massive storm will impact millions as it charges toward the southeastern us, and is expected to bring with it massive amounts of rain, unsafe flooding and powerful storm surges.

At least 12,000 people had taken refuge in 126 emergency shelters, Cooper said, with more facilities being opened.

Officials found a basketball-sized hole in the hotel wall and other life-threatening damage, with some cinder blocks crumbling and parts of the roof collapsing.

The storm's center was about 170 miles southeast of Wilmington at 8 a.m. Thursday, according to a National Hurricane Center briefing.

Florence is moving toward land at 9 kilometers per hour (6 mph), giving it more time to churn, suck up water, batter the coast, and bring massive amounts of rain inland.

More than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to evacuate over the past few days, and the homes of about 10 million were under watches or warnings for the hurricane or tropical storm conditions. City spokeswoman Colleen Roberts tells WRAL-TV that 200 people have already been rescued. "For these airports along the coast, like Charleston and Myrtle Beach, the wind and the tidal surge will be the biggest issues".

Winds and rain were arriving later in SC, and a few people were still walking on the sand at Myrtle Beach while North Carolina was getting pounded. Its forward movement increased slightly to 6 miles per hour (9 kph).

The outer reaches of Hurricane Florence began lashing coastal North Carolina with heavy winds and flooded roads on Thursday ahead of an expected landfall that will bring walls of water and lingering downpours to parts of the US East Coast.

The storm is now 280 miles southeast of Wilmington with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference that the "historic" hurricane would unleash rains and floods that would inundate nearly the entire state in several feet of water.
