Landslide at famed Greek 'shipwreck' beach injures 7

This is the terrifying moment Shipwreck Beach in Zante, Greece was hit by tonnes of rock falling from a cliff.

Rescuers from the local coast guard and the fire department soon arrived on the scene to evacuate the beach and prevent boats from approaching.

At least seven people have been injured after a rockfall at a popular beach on the Greek Island of Zakynthos.

"We haven't found any trapped people but we will continue searching", a spokesperson for the fire brigade said.

Footage posted on social media showed people running in panic as a large section of the cliff peeled off and crashed down close to several bathers.

The force of the fall created a large wave, resulting in a couple of small vessels in the vicinity being overturned.

A Czech woman suffered back injuries and was transferred to hospital, a coast official said.

Witnesses on the beach said there were three boats with passengers in the area during the landslide.

The coastguard later called off their search, saying everyone who had travelled to the beach on the tourist boats had been accounted for. The woman's husband and two children were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Zakynthos is also known as Zante in Western Europe.
