Querrey fightback keeps US Davis Cup hopes alive

Substitute Sam Querrey - who replaced Steve Johnson - had earlier given the United States hope when he brought the overall score back to 2-2 with a surprise victory over Marin Cilic.

Coric then outlasted Tiafoe 6-7 (0-7) 6-1 6-7 (11-13) 6-1 6-3 to send Croatia into their first final since 2016.

Tiafoe improved on serve in the third set and did not face a single break point.

Less than a week after his high-profile argument with Serena Williams at the US Open, umpire Carlos Ramos was back on duty at the Davis Cup.

"In these later stages of my career I enjoy it so much to play Davis Cup", Cilic said.

"I just hung in there", said Querrey, who jumped into the arms of USA captain Jim Courier to celebrate.

Croatia reached the Davis Cup final after Borna Coric beat Frances Tiafoe in over four hours to secure a 3-2 victory over the United States.

Croatia could book a date with either France or Spain in the november title match in Saturday's doubles in which Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic will face Mike Bryan and Ryan Harrison.

Ramos belatedly received public backing from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and took his place in the chair for Cilic's routine 6-1 6-3 7-6 (7-5) win over Tiafoe.

With his 37th Davis Cup victory, Cilic moved atop Croatia's all-time list, one ahead of Ivan Ljubicic.

Croatia is looking to extend its flawless record over the U.S.to 5-0.

The eighth-ranked Austrian won 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 but had to come back twice from a break down in the fourth set.

Benoit Paire and Lucas Pouille both won their singles matches on Friday to open the 2-0 lead on the hard indoor surface at Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille, France.
