Amazon may open as many as 3000 cashierless convenience stores

Opening multiple locations in proximity, like it's doing in Seattle, could also help Amazon reduce costs by centralising food production in one kitchen serving many stores.

Amazon is said to be interested in beating grocery stores at their own game by opening 3,000 more of its cashier-less Amazon Go shops over the next three years, reports Bloomberg.

Currently, Amazon Go has three locations in Seattle, Washington and one in Chicago, the latter of which just opened this week. The first Seattle location opened in 2016, and it is one of two that have a small selection of groceries in addition to the limited options of salads, sandwiches and snacks all of the stores have.

Additionally, retail experts say it would take a lot of money and time to site, develop and staff thousands of new locations, making it unlikely Amazon could create that many stores from scratch in just a few years. A fourth AmazonGo opened Monday in Chicago and there are plans to open a fifth in New York City. Once inside, cameras and sensors track what they pick up from the shelves and what they put back.

Amazon did not immediately respond to FOX Business' request for comment.

"People familiar with the matter" told Bloomberg that Amazon is planning for 10 locations by the end of this year.

Amazon may open 3,000 cashierless stores by 2021 - as survey reveals it's now third in online ads

The e-tail giant now has four Amazon Go stores: three in Seattle and one in Chicago, which opened on Monday.

Whatever Amazon ultimately plans in rolling out Amazon Go, retailers of all stripes are already keeping a close watch.

In December 2016, Amazon unveiled a convenience store in downtown Seattle that replaced cashiers with technology found in self-driving cars. "I also think Amazon is fully aware that Whole Foods is not necessarily the complete solution to their bricks-and-mortar", Wolfe Research analyst Scott Mushkin said earlier this week at a Supermarket News roundtable discussion.

To recap, shoppers at Amazon Go simply scan their phones loaded with the necessary companion app when they enter, and then grab the items they want, and leave.

"Amazon is fully aware that they have to be much bigger in consumables and that omnichannel is what's going to work in consumables. It's too far away".
