Canadian scientist Donna Strickland shares Nobel physics prize

Arthur Ashkin in the United States, Gérard Mourou in France, and Donna Strickland in Canada will share the 9m Swedish kronor (£770,000) prize announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm on Tuesday.

The Nobel website says that the Nobel Prize in Physics 2017 was divided, and one half awarded to Rainer Weiss, the other half jointly to Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne "for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves". At 96, he is the oldest person ever named as a laureate for any of the prestigious awards.

She shares half the $1.4 million prize with French laser physicist Gerard Mourou.

Wednesday: Nobel Prize in chemistry will be awarded.

Ashkin's work was based on the realization that the pressure of a beam of light could push microscopic objects and trap them in position.

Dr Mourou and Dr Strickland helped develop short and intense laser pulses that have broad industrial and medical applications.

However, for the first time in decades no Nobel Prize for literature will be given this year after a scandal over sexual misconduct allegations saw a string of members leave the board of the Swedish Academy that awards it.
