In a bid to have a manned presence in space, India is now planning to send an astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) on a Russian spacecraft in 2022, according to Russian media outlet Sputnik.

Considering the recent air leak in the ISS, the three astronauts who set out for Earth yesterday aboard the Soyuz MS-08 were probably breathing sighs of relief.

The crew completed hundreds of experiments during its 197-day expedition in space.

"NASA and Roscosmos are both investigating the incident to determine the cause", NASA said on Wednesday.

Members of the worldwide crew of a manned transportation spacecraft Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev, NASA astronauts Andrew Feustel and Richard Arnold have become the members of the 56 expedition.

Feustel has now logged more than 226 days in space on three spaceflights. Chawla was one of the seven crew members who perished in the space shuttle Columbia disaster during re-entry into the earth's atmosphere in 2003.

While he was on his third mission in space, 47-year-old Artemyev and 54-year-old Arnold had previously only served on one mission each.

A European astronaut has taken command of the International Space Station for the second time since 2009.

The duo performed a total of three spacewalks to conduct maintenance and upgrades.

Meanwhile, Expedition 57 continues station research and operations, with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin scheduled to launch on October 11 for a same-day arrival, adding to the crew onboard the International Space Station.
