Typhoon Kong-rey heads toward Japan and South Korea

The storm, carrying maximum sustained winds of 162 kph and gusts of up to 198 kph, is expected to swing past Taiwan's northeast coast on Thursday as it moves toward Okinawa, the bureau said.

When Typhoon Kong-rey nears mainland Japan, it is now not forecast to be as strong as Jebi or even Typhoon Trami, which made landfall as a strong typhoon 157 kph (97 mph).

Kong-rey is now packing wind speeds of 69mph with higher gusts of 86mph.

Noted that Kong-Rey will be the 25th consecutive typhoons in Japan this year.

Recall at least two people were killed and 105 were injured in Japan due to Typhoon "Centres".

The typhoon caused travel chaos for the country, as train services and flights were cancelled.

It is feared the typhoon will bring heavy rain to northern Kyushu on Saturday and possibly to eastern and northern Japan toward Sunday, depending on its course, according to the agency.

It was the strongest typhoon since Typhoon Yancy hit in 1993.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from Walaka's center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles.

In the 24 hours to noon on Friday, Okinawa could see downpours of up to 200 mm and be pounded by winds of up to 162 kph, with waves rising as high as 10 meters, the weather agency said.

That makes it likely to reach Jeju Island and other southern Korean regions this weekend, where authorities are calling for thorough preparations.

Japan's capital Tokyo will avoid the brunt of the storm but could feel the effect of winds later this weekend.
