And Southgate has included Mount, the Chelsea attacking midfielder now on loan at Derby County, in his selection for the first time, while Leicester City star Maddison and Borussia Dortmund's Sancho are also in line to win their first caps.

"I think this aligns with what we've done in the last 18 months, really", said Southgate, who helped bring about the end of Wayne Rooney's global career a year ago.

"We've got a few injuries in the midfield in particular - Dele (Alli), Jesse (Lingard) and Ruben (Loftus-Cheek) have been missing - and Fabian Delph, so there is an opportunity there".

"But we think they are performing well with their clubs, they're confident players".

"I have learned a great deal from them and their passion and professionalism in representing England has been an inspiration to my own work".

Several other uncapped players are also involved: Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah making up the sextet of debutantes.

Maddison, 21, who has won four England Under-21 caps, was watched by Southgate when he helped the Foxes beat Newcastle United on Saturday.

The 18-year-old Sancho was called up having already played in the Champions League for German club Dortmund, with Mount rewarded for some strong displays at English second-tier club Derby after joining on loan from Premier League giants Chelsea. Sancho has been Dortmund's "super sub" during a fine start to the domestic campaign, scoring one goal and laying on six assists in just 124 minutes on the pitch - no player in Europe's top-five leagues has provided more assists!

Sancho, a gifted wide midfielder who is 17, joined Dortmund from Manchester City previous year and has broken through this season, scoring one goal and providing seven assists in nine games mostly off the bench.
