The man then chose to take his rock to Mona Sirbescu, a geology faculty member in earth and atmospheric sciences at Central Michigan University.

The 22lb (10kg) meteorite was the biggest the geologist had been asked to examine in her career. Weighing 22 pounds, it's the sixth-largest recorded find in MI - and potentially worth $100,000, according to CMU.

A rock that was used as a doorstop on a MI farm for decades has been identified as a meteorite worth $100,000.

The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he was aware of the rock's provenance from the time he bought the house in Edmore in 1988. She sent two small slices to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., to validate her findings.

This January, southern MI experienced a meteor flash that showered fragments of space rock all over Livingston County.

"I could tell right away that this was something special", she said, noting that it's the sixth-largest meteorite found in MI.

The Smithsonian and another museum in Maine have already expressed interest in the rock, and Sirbescu called it "the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically".

A man discovers that his "rock" doorstop isn't a rock at all. He said the farmer who sold him the property told him it landed in his backyard in the 1930s. The farmer and his father recovered it in the morning, digging it free - it was reportedly still warm to the touch when retrieved.

Washington senators voice opposition to Kavanaugh confirmation on Senate floor
Senate, and with the two key senators choosing to vote in favor of Kavanaugh, the confirmation looked locked-in late on Friday. Trump also said women, far from being outraged at Kavanaugh, "were outraged at what happened to Brett Kavanaugh , outraged".

The buyer ended up leaving the property eventually but took the 10-kilogram rock with him.

The man told Sirbescu that he kept the rock for the next 30 years, even after moving away from the farm.

He was inspired to have it checked out by the university after a rise in meteorite discoveries in MI.

Then, "I said, wait a minute".

A man has discovered a rock he's been using as a doorstop for 30 years is a meteorite worth more than $100,000.

Now, the space rock, dubbed Edmore meteorite, is waiting to find a permanent home.

But tests are underway at UCLA to see if it contains rare elements that would bump up the value.
