Limo that crashed, killing 20 failed inspection; Driver not properly licensed

The limousine was carrying a group of friends and relatives to a 30th birthday party near Albany, New York, on Saturday, when it plowed through a junction, hit two pedestrians and a parked SUV, and plunged into a ditch.

He said his parents were still "in shock" by the sudden death of more than half of their children.

The limousine involved in the deadliest transport accident in the United States for almost a decade had failed inspection and the driver was not properly licensed, a top official said Monday. "The driver did not have that proper license", Cuomo added. "You know that sound when it happens".

The crash on Saturday in the town of Schoharie (skoh-HAYR'-ee) killed two pedestrians and 18 occupants of a limousine, including four sisters.

Halse, 26, a waitress in Watervliet, was in the limousine with Cushing, her boyfriend, who worked in the technology office of New York's Senate. She was one of the four sisters killed.

"My sister was a very strong and independent person", Karina Halse said.

They had gotten together last weekend to make a day trip to Vermont with their mom.

"I don't know if this a situation where we can find a new law or a new regulation", Cuomo said.

Amanda Rivenburg spent her days helping those in need as the associate director of day community opportunities program at Living Resources, an organization that services people with disabilities, according to the Times-Union.

"The motor is making everyone deaf", Erin McGowan texted a friend, complaining that the vehicle was in "terrible condition", according to the Times. "When we get to brewery we will all b deaf", she texted the same friend, moments before the fatal crash.

The 2001 Ford Excursion limousine was travelling southwest on Route 30 in Schoharie, about 270 kilometres north of New York City around 2pm when it failed to stop at a T-junction with state Route 30A, State Police First Deputy Superintendent Christopher Fiore said at a news conference in Latham, New York.

Patrick Cushing's brother, Justin Cushing, described Patrick in a statement obtained by The Times as someone who loved photography and was a member of Team USA Dodgeball.

"He had such empathy and kindness".

"He loved, hugged and cried with his family and friends like their problems were his", he said.

Axel's brother, Rich Steenburg, was also in the limo, their aunt Jessica Andrews confirmed to CNN affiliate WHAM.

The NTSB is investigating the crash and will look at safety regulations for limousines, whose passengers are not required to wear seat belts.

"She was a handsome, sweet soul; he was too", Abeling said.

Various US reports named the driver as 53-year-old Scott Lisinicchia, but police have yet to officially confirm this.

A GoFundMe page set up for Cavosie's family Monday had raised more than 11,000 by mid-afternoon. Jackson was a special education teacher in Amsterdam, said Santabarbara, who represents the part of NY where the crash happened.

Their names were Abigail Jackson, Mary Dyson, Allison King and Amy. The gym held a special workout in her honor on Monday.

Abeling said in an interview from upstate NY where her family was gathered.

"It's tragic. awful. I can't even begin to even explain", Valerie Abeling told The Washington Post, confirming that her 34-year-old niece, Erin McGowan, and her new husband, Shane McGowan, 30, were among the dead.
