Are schools in session for the day?

The mayor's office said the decision wasn't made because many US cities are replacing their observance of Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous Peoples Day, but rather because the city doesn't have the budget to give its 8,500 employees off on both that and Veterans Day. But, the Stock Market and NASDAQ are open for business.

Offices in Columbus, Ohio, will remain open Monday and close on Veterans Day instead. "Columbus's spirit of determination and adventure has provided inspiration to generations of Americans". However, TD Bank is open.

Columbus Day celebrates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. The other two are Presidents' Day and Veterans Day. Branches will re-open on Tuesday, October 9, 2018.

'We have a number of veterans who work for the city, and there are so many here in Columbus, ' Davis said.

Grocery stores: Most grocery stores will remain open. Bond markets are closed. Cleveland, which has a large Italian-American population, continues to host a major Columbus Day parade. In addition, garbage removal should be on schedule, unless it has been otherwise announced in your local area.

Just this year, at least a dozen USA cities - including San Francisco and Cincinnati - chose to stop observing Columbus Day and will instead celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday. That's not the case in some other srates, including Alaska and South Dakota, where the holiday has been officially replaced by celebrations of indigenous people. What was once a national holiday meant to celebrate Christopher Columbus' colonization of the Americas - and his first encounter with Indigenous peoples on october 11th, 1492 - has been wisely re-branded to celebrate the lives of the Indigenous people who are still with us, and to honor those were enslaved, displaced, and suffered a genocide the likes of which are unprecedented.

In 1971, Columbus Day was moved to the second Monday of October.
