Collins said she read "every word" and found no evidence corroborating Christine Blasey Ford's allegation that Kavanaugh tried to rape her when they were in high school. But the Christian Right didn't push for Kavanaugh's confirmation so aggressively because they think he shares the more libertarian views that retired Justice Anthony Kennedy had on abortion rights; Kavanaugh was nominated because he is an "originalist" or "strict constructionist" and a hardcore social conservative.

Last week Rice, who served in the Obama administration, generated a strong reaction when she tweeted "me" in response to a post from former White House Communications Director Jen Psaki asking, "Who wants to run for Senate in Maine?"

They contained the official text of her 44-minute address to colleagues Friday afternoon - a speech that took the wind out of Democrats' opposition, sealed Justice Kavanaugh's confirmation and, according to her colleagues, will go down in history as a masterful statement of centrist principles in a chamber where the political center has all but disappeared. And because it was created to directly influence her vote, the legality may be dicey.

Decrying the unprecedented amount of dark money spent opposing Judge Kavanaugh's nomination, Senator Collins said, "Our Supreme Court confirmation process has been in steady decline for more than 30 years". A crowdsourcing group says it has secured pledges of more than $3 million for her opponent in 2020.

On the subject of Kavanaugh, she told reporters the supplemental Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that she pushed for, along with GOP Sens.

Collins admitted the Kavanaugh debate was hard. "I mean, that is a devastating allegation", said Collins. "He perhaps needs to withdraw, "' she said. "I applaud her efforts". So I think it was understandable that he was reacting as a human being, as a father, as a father of two young girls.

Old Republican names, now nearly lost to history, were the thought leaders and kingmakers of the GOP: Governor and Senator Leverett A. Saltonstall, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Senator Prescott Bush, Senator Margaret Chase Smith, Rep. Hamilton Fish IV and others were of the old breed of Yankee, mostly Protestant "good government" Republicans who were more in tune with the progressivism of Teddy Roosevelt than the growing conservative movement.

Speaking in New York during The New Yorker Festival, Rice said Collins "put party and politics over her own stated principles" of supporting equal rights and legalized abortion.

"As far as Susan Rice is concerned, her family has a home in Maine, but she doesn't live in the state of Maine", Collins said. "The last 20 so years I've been a home owner in the state of Maine, so it's not completely insane", she said.

Susan Collins of ME isn't up for re-election until 2020, but critics vowed today she'll pay a political price for voting for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
