President Donald Trump took a prime-time victory lap on Monday night following the successful confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, proudly proclaiming that the man had been "proven innocent" after a "campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception". Kavanaugh is accompanied by his wife Ashley Kavanaugh, third from left, and children Margaret, second from left, and Liza.

His remarks on Murkowski were part of a wide-ranging interview in which McConnell acknowledged that the extended fight over confirming Kavanaugh has widened an existing gender gap in which Republicans trail Democrats in support among women.

The other eight justices were all in attendance for Monday's swearing-in, which was entirely ceremonial. "They're a credit to the country and the Senate", Kavanaugh said. He added however that if someone else were to take over the role of committee chair, "they'll have to decide for themselves, but that's a decision I made a long time ago".

"I´ve always been told it´s the biggest thing a president can do and I can understand that", he said.

Kavanaugh moved to the Supreme Court after spending 12 years as a judge on the influential U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, building a conservative judicial record.

"I think a lot of Democrats are going to vote Republican", he said.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has received complaints about Brett Kavanaugh's statements during hearings on his confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a statement Saturday by a judge on the federal appeals court.

"The we can finally get down to the fact as to whether or not she has Indian blood", the president said.

Kavanaugh denied the allegations and during a Senate hearing on September 27 accused Democrats of an "orchestrated political hit".

"The older the voter, the angrier they are about the treatment of both Kavanaugh and Ford, but those 40 and over are madder about how Kavanaugh was treated".

President Trump has praised his US Supreme Court pick. Kavanaugh, in contrast, is expected to be a more decidedly conservative vote, tilting the court right for decades and leaving Chief Justice John Roberts as the justice closest to the ideological middle.

Mr Kavanaugh already has been at the Supreme Court preparing for his first day on the bench Tuesday.

Between Thursday and Saturday of last week, the Capitol Police arrested more than 544 protesters related to the Kavanaugh nomination.

Mr Kavanaugh's elevation to the high court had been considered safe until California university professor Christine Blasey Ford went public with explosive allegations that he had sexually assaulted her in 1982, while they were in high school.
