Microsoft says it fixed a Windows 10 update bug that deleted folders

Microsoft believes it has fixed a glitch in the latest Windows 10 update that was causing users to permanently lose some of their files.

Known Folder Redirects gives users options to move the classic Windows folders Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and so on to another location.

Users who moved a Known Folder to a new drive experienced the issue if content of the old folder was not moved to the new destination.

Last week, Microsoft began rolling out the October 2018 Update to Windows 10, bringing a whole slew of new features and app upgrades.

After pausing the roll-out of a Windows 10 update that some users said was deleting their personal files, Microsoft says it has identified and fixed the issue - but it's not quite ready for prime time just yet. It happened to "one one-hundredth of one percent of version 1809 installs", he indicated.

As the October 2018 update was only made available for customers who actively checked for updates in Windows Update, the company says that "the number of customers taking the October 2018 update was limited". Data loss is considered to be a serious outcome, but the problem wasn't flagged highly for Microsoft because of the small number of affected users, Cable suggested.

Windows on Hold for Now Cable outlined three scenarios where such file loss had occurred. The company has released Windows 10 cumulative updates to several previous versions of the operating system, including the April 2018 Update, Fall Creators Update, Creators Update, and the Anniversary Update.

This includes fixes for system components such as the Windows kernel, graphics and file systems, the wireless networking and peripherals subsystems, along with the JET database engine, Windows Media Player and the Edge and Internet Explorer web browsers among others.

Microsoft support technicians "have the tools to get you back to a good state", Windows Insider Program lead Dona Sarkar tweets. Microsoft plans to re-release the new OSes after getting testing feedback. Now it has re-released the update, fixing the issue while shedding some light on how many people were impacted by the bug.
