The chairman of the Nigerian Psychological Association, Federal Capital Territory Chapter, Dr Emmanuel Alhassan, in a statement to mark this year's World Mental Health Day, which comes up tomorrow, October 10th said if mental health issues are tackled as soon as they occur, they may not degenerate to mental illnesses. It can be hard for them to access support independently, and hard for parents to know how to help them or get support themselves.

Stress is the most common response, with over half (55%) experiencing this frequently or occasionally, compared to 54% for sleeplessness, 47% for low mood, and 41% for anxiety.

"The 2030 Agenda is clear: We must leave no one behind. If we can construct a system that can respond to young people at risk, when and where they need support - be that in the community, in primary or emergency care, or within tertiary services - we will undoubtedly be better placed to reverse the devastating trend we have seen over this past 10 years".

Despite this alarming scenario, mental health continues to be a taboo topic with vast stigma attached to it.
