This comes after Gunn was sacked from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after alt-right figures unearthed inappropriate and offensive old tweets from Gunn, who is reported to write and possibly direct this DC movie.

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a unsafe black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences.

This could be somewhat of a coup for Warner Bros., the studio behind Suicide Squad and other films based on DC superheroes.

The director was sacked from the Disney franchise of films after tweets from years ago saw revealed jokes in poor taste, concerning rape and pedophilia - since then, Gunn has apologised and said he had grown as a person in the years since the jokes.

Deadline had reported the Suicide Squad 2 news, which sees the film-maker on board to write and possibly also direct.

Newsbeat's been told that the new film would be a "new take" on the franchise rather than a direct sequel. Entertainment has exclusively confirmed to io9 that its DC Entertainment arm has picked up quite the contributor: writer and director James Gunn. However, subsequent reports would in fact confirm that the new scenes were meant to lighten the mood of the film following the negative reception to Dawn of Justice's darkness. Something which the director of the first film David Ayers agrees with as he tweeted his support for the change.

Regarding Guardians of the Galaxy 3, it is presently on permanent hold, and Disney has yet to announce a replacement director and release date. Now he has to make Suicide Squad 2. Maybe, Gunn can improve the series in his sequel. Either way, Gunn has already proven himself more than capable of making comic book-adapted movies about big dysfunctional groups of characters. The publication writes that the directing gig could be decided once his script is complete.
