Guthrie told BuzzFeed that Swift's post led to Vote.org having 155,940 unique visitors, which is the second-highest total behind National Voter Registration Day on September 25, where the organization saw 304,942 unique visitors.

The nonprofit site, which helps people register online, reported 240,000 new registrations since Swift posted a message on Instagram endorsing two Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee and urging people to register.

For comparison's sake, 190,178 new voters were registered via Vote.org nationwide during September and 56,669 in August.

But on Sunday, Swift told her 112 million Instagram followers that she was backing and would vote for two Democrats running in Tennessee in the USA congressional midterm elections on November 6.

In addition to Bredesen, Swift endorsed Democratic US Representative Jim Cooper for re-election in a Tennessee congressional race.

"She voted against the reauthorisation of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape".

"Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me", she continued, before citing several examples of how she said Blackburn voted.

"These are not MY Tennessee values", Swift wrote. I'm honored to have your support and that of so many Tennesseans who are ready to put aside the partisan shouting and get things done.

Cash defended Swift on Twitter, saying, "Those who tell her to stay away from politics are actually telling her to stay away from citizenship".

In the Sunday post, Swift warned her followers in Tennessee that if they missed the October 9 voter registration deadline, there would be "trouble when you walked in" to a polling place and no "Blank Space" to write their candidate's name.

Guthrie said it's hard to credit Swift directly for the spike in registrations because there is usually some kind of a surge just before voter registration deadlines, in election years, since "people wait until the deadline to register".

However, Swift didn't acknowledge Bredesen's recent endorsement of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, but said people may never find a candidate or party with whom they agree completely on every issue.

Through just nine days in October, more Americans have registered to vote through Vote.org than any other full month this year. She also directed her fans to vote.org.

The 10-time-Grammy-winning singer's comments drew praise on the left and derision on the right, including from former Arizona governor Mike Huckabee, who said the move would not make a difference to the election's outcome "unless we allow 13-year-olds to vote". "I'm sure Taylor Swift doesn't know anything about her", Trump told a pool of reporters.

But in a lengthy Instagram post, she passionately spoke about how this was not the case.
