Nick Kyrgios censured by umpire over 'borderline' effort at Shanghai Masters

At the start of his career, his courting of drama was considered something he would most likely grow out of.

Nick Kyrgios was involved in an argument with umpire Damien Dumusois during his first-round exit at the Shanghai Masters... the Australian is no stranger to drama in China's biggest city.

Todd Woodbridge believes Nick Kyrgios is copping extra scrutiny from umpires but doesn't help himself by the way he engages with them.

Dumusois called Kyrgios out for lackluster play at one point, saying his efforts were "really borderline" during the second set. However, the American dominated the match and won the next 2-sets 6-4 and 6-3.

Three games later, Kyrgios smashed an ace and turned to Dumusois to ask "was that borderline poor?" before the French official told him "that's enough".

He later cautioned the umpire: "You know I literally could just go to the ATP office after this and say I just felt put down from your comment and you'd be in trouble, right?"

The 23-year-old was on the end of a surprise loss to the American qualifier Bradley Klahn, the world number 104 winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Cora even aced his pitching moves. "Yeah, that's what we do", he said. "He shouldn't be anywhere near a playoff game". The music playing throughout the clubhouse was "New York, New York", the song the Yankees play after home wins.

"I think with Nick when he's fresh he plays great and it's about managing schedules as much as anything, so that he plays no more than three weeks in row and then he gets away from it", Woodbridge said at the launch for next year's Australian Open.

He was subsequently fined $US16,500 for his behaviour in the 6-3 6-1 defeat.

He was then fined after he quit his first-round tie against Steve Johnson a year ago after losing the opening set.

Anyone, tennis follower or not, who watches Kyrgios will be impressed by his athleticism, ball striking and creativity on the court.

During last month's US Open, an umpire copped a ban after he gave Kyrgios a freaky mid-match pep talk.

Kyrgios has a chequered history at the Shanghai Masters after quitting mid-match against Steve Johnson in the first round previous year and being accused of tanking in a second-round loss to Mischa Zverev in 2016.

De Minaur is ranked one spot ahead of compatriot John Millman as both climbed spots due to Kyrgios' dramatic, 11-place fall.
